I’ve enjoyed this guy’s advice on Cozycampus.com more then a few times.

It’s a little early for me to cover this point, but this article covers the basics very well. I will in the future share my experience with specific providers, and whether I’d recommend them or not. There are a lot of folks that sell CRAP.

Remember to study constantly, and to keep up to date with the industry.

The nest thing you need to do is to decide your business structure.

You can choose a sole propiertership, a partnership, or a corporation (there is also an S corporate structure which is more suited for small groups).

First advice first, get a lawyer before you formally set up any legal structures. My advice might be wrong, or might not apply to your situation. I just want to give an overview.

The easiest thing is working for yourself. All you’ll need is a DBA (Doing Business As) if you want a “company” name. That is almost all the paperwork you’ll need. The big problem with this model is if you have the oppurtunity to expand later, you’ll need to set up one of the other structures later. Another problem is that it is much easier to mix up your company and personal finaces if you go this route.

Going back to my Jan post on knowing yourself, I’m a little embarrassed. I know that I am susceptible to depression. I had thought that wouldn’t be a problem when I quit my job, and started “full-time” on this biz.

Of course, then I had a list of “shit happens” longer then John Kerry’s lie list. I’m not talking biz malfunctions, which I expected. The roof just wore me out after all the rest of crap that happened. BTW, the fucking thing still has a hole in it, but now the association is working with me. I was planning on suing the fuckers, as much as I hate lawyers. Anyway, now that my money has almost run out, I get to catch up on three months of inactivity. Yea. 1000 emails in my box - at least I know I’ve got that type of capacity.

I’m still a little fuzzy, but I’ve wasted three months now. That’s why knowing what your capabilities are so important.
